Our McCurdy Line from Early
Europe to Adams County Pennsylvania-Purportedtd
EXCESSIVE CAUTION is advised in these earliest lines
[to three generations] There appears to be no firm documentation,
yet many sources yield this ascendancy in absence of primary sources. This
must be considered oral tradition and of no firm geneological merit.

GilkristMcCURDY (MAKURERDY) [Caution:
No firm documentation of his progeny] [Frequently referred to as [Chief
] ]
b. abt 1425, Isle Of Bute, Scotland
" As far as I am aware the only
authentic data on Gilchrist is that he was granted half of the land of
Bruchog on the Island of Bute by James IV(?) in c1489 which grant was eventually
ratified by the Scottish Privy Council in a General Charter in 1506. Another
Gilchrist (McCurdy) was granted land of Bransier at the same time as were
several others of the same surname. Anything else about either Gilchrist
is pure romance. I will be pleased to be contradicted by anyone who can
produce ANY source material contributing any additional facts about either
of the Gilchrists. John

[ìDonald was the father of Donald
Jr. and Alexander; the latter's son Robert was the father of Robert, the
Baron of Garratchy, to whom most of the feued lands descended.ì]
This is the first generation of geneological
merit. Donald and his son Fingal were killed in battle in 1600 according
to Blanchard.

ìDonald, Jr. was probably born about 1550
and may be properly termed the "Founder of the MacKirdys" as he was the
first, so far as known to contract the name from Makurerdy. Of his children
we have no authentic account except of his son Fingal, who, with his father
was killed in a battle with a Cameron clan in 1600. Fingal's son Donald
became his heir. ì

Blanchard states: "James, the fourth child
of Daniel and Margaret (Laughlin) McCurdy, was born in 1706. In 'Historical
Genealogy"' p. 73, he is erroneously spoken of as son of John.
He married Polly Cook, and came to America about 1726. He first located
on the James River, Vt
[editorial note: sic, MD] .but later, 1731,
moved to Pennsylvania."
