Will Abstact:
SWOOPE, Conrad.  Hanover Township.
July 29, 1799    September 5, 1799
Executors:  George Charles and John Swoope.
Wife:  Gloria Swoope.
Children:  John, Henry, George and Adam.7

G E Swope writes of Conrad SWOPE:

ìHe was a man of kindly disposition and warm affections, finding his chief enjoyment in home and the family circle. He was a confirmed member of the old Conewago (St. Matthewís) Lutheran Church, Hanover, and was an elder in the same for many years. He took great pleasure and was faithful in the discharge of all his church duties. He reared his children in his faith and most of his descendants have been identified with the Lutheran Church.  He died..sincerely regretted, not only by his family, but by the commuinity at large. Four hundred and fifty persons are descended from him, but only seven living males bear the Swope name (Editors Note: Excerpt dated 1898) . His will shows him to have been in comfortable circumstances. He left his wife well provided for and bequests to each of his children.î 1

Historical Context:

Regarding Conrad SWOPE's Trade:
ìEvery colonial village needed a potter to turn out the utensils that were so necessary on every farm and in the kitchen of every dwelling. All early American pottery was "redware" which was shaped from plain brick clay that was colored naturally by iron oxide. The Pennsylvania Dutch potters made beautiful Sgraffitowarre by dipping the articles into white slip and, after it had set up, would scratch patterns of tulips, lilies, etc, through it revealing the red clay underneath. We would really have a cherished article if we could find a piece of pottery or a dish with the name of Johannes Schwab or one of his sons or gradsons upon it. The Papers of the Lancaster County Historical Society, vol, 50, 1946, page 118 and 121 state that Jacob Swope, a descendant of Johannes Schwab, living north of Bird-in-Hand was operating a pottery in 1820; ,,he was making roofing tiles.. His son, Zuriel, also in the pottery business, made clay pipes.î2

A little about Hanover, which at this time was ëDigges Choiceí, and apparantly Conrad's choice too as he moved there as an adult from his father's home in Leacock Twp, Lancaster County:

"Lord Baltimore of Maryland granted John Digges 10,000 acres in 1727. The Digges Choice tract as surveyed in 1732 contained 6,822 acres and was described as lying on "Little Conewago Creek." It principally lay in what is now Adams County, but passed into York County. In this county it comprised the present limits of Germany and Conewago Townships. In August 1745, a resurvey was made and 3,679 acres were added to the former survey. This tract was 4 miles north of the temporary line between Pennsylvania and Maryland surveyed in 1732.
From 1735 to 1752 Germans came by the thousands. In the fall of 1749 no less than 20 ships arrived in Philadelphia bringing 12,000 passengers. Digges Choice grew into Hanover and surrounding townships. Hanover was laid out in 1764."41

"The German Squatters in ìDiggesí Choiceî folllowed up the principle of the squatters in the ìManor of Maskeî [ed. note, pertains to our McCurdy Forebears] but , making only a formal resistance, were on the point of being subjected, when Jacob Kitzmiller shot Dudley Digges, a son of the ìlandlordî and routed the sheriff. This act, and the acquittal of the peasant, shed new light on the land question, and possibly was the second paving stone in the street which is leading to ownership of land by the cultivator of the land. Does it not seem strange that here on Marsh Creek [Editors note, where the Manor of Maske was located in now Adams County further West of Digges Choice] , where the Irish squatter-cultivator first fought for the ownership of his own labor, the decisive blow was struck at colored slavery 122 years later? "
