Educ of Johan Jacob Hock: Matriculated Marburg University May 4, 1702.
From the HOKE webpages by Derick S. Hartshorn 2
ìJohann Jacob HOKE(1) was born about 1695 in Germany. He died
before 21 Jun 1766 in York Co., Pennsylvania. It is assumed that Johann
Jacob Hoke arrived on the ship "Mortonhouse" Aug. 24, 1728, John Coultes,
Master. Unfortunately this list does not give the ages or the names of
the females and children. His name does appear on all three lists meaning
he was over twenty-one years of age. In his will he names the five children
by his first wife. Since the record of the birth of his fifth child, Eva
Jul. 14, 1730, has been found, he must have married and had chidren born
in Germany, apparently coming to America with a family. The only other
Johann Jacob on these early lists arrived in 1749. This could not be the
Jacob of this history for church records for the birth of three of his
children, the marriage record of his eldest daughter, and his land purchase
in what is now York Co. Pa. as all preceed 1749.
From Don S Neal's Webpages75:
ìJohan Jacob Hoke is thought to have arrived in Philadelphia (from
Rotterdam by way of clearance in Deal, England, on June 15) on August 23,
1728. His ship of passage was the Mortonhouse, commanded by John
Coultas. We know that Hoke was in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, by mid-July
of 1730, for a daughter was born there then, and he remained in that county
(in the Ephrata area) until early 1746. Although this daughter had her
birth registered in the New Holland Church in Lancaster, Hoke seems to
have been active in the First German Reformed Church there.
The First German Reformed Church congregation built a log structure
at Orange Street above Queen for its meeting house, which by Whitsuntide
Sunday in 1736 (June 20) was sufficiently completed to house a worship
service. At that time the congregation called Hoke
to be their first minister. All this makes one suspect that Johan had
received some training in theology at Marburg University, which was a leading
Protestant university and had a school of theology. Evidently Johan had
earned his living with his hands until the rather new
First German Reformed Church could support him as its minister. He
was described as"reverend and truly pious." Hoke served this church ? performing
all pastoral functions except marriages ? only for about a year and
a half, however, after which the church was without a pastor for another
year and a half. Whether Hoke remained in Lancaster or had moved on we
do not know. î
