Maria Sabina is one of 10 siblings, 5 of whom  married into the birth families of our direct lines, while two other of her siblings had children who married grandchildren of our direct lines . The Smyser family is not direct to us, but their role in the social and economic welfare of our direct forebears is distinct, and they hold of place of significant social importance to our direct EICHELBERGERS, HOKES and SWOPES. For this reason I have created a Smyser Line showing the alliances within one generation to our directs where they occur.

Children of John HOKE and Maria Sabina SWOPE
Notes on Maria Sabina "Sabina SWOPE and her position as matriarch to the Confederate south:
Sabina is a matriarch of the pride of the conferderate south, removing there as a widow and with her children.  Many of her grandsons served in the civil war, and several of her grandchildrenís families had all boys of age serving.  Two  of her great grandsons Forney were Brigadier Generals, CSA, a great grandson Robert Frederick Hoke  was a Major General for the CSA, and many other of her grandchildren /greatgrandchildren were officers. One family among her descendants (The Daniel Hoke family)  lost three of four boys in battle to the cause, the fourth apparantly preserved only because of his tender age at the time of the War ( Daniel is son of Hon. Henry who is  Sabinaís son ).  Sabina " lived in York county, Pa, until her husbandís death at which time she, together with her children, moved to Lincoln county, North Carolina, (1797 or 1798) where her children established themselves and became prominent members of the community. On the death of her father in 1780, she received from his estate, by will, one hundred and twenty-five pounds. "36

îSabina was a very superior woman, having great strength of character energy and perseverance. She, being left a widow, felt a great responsibility in rearing her children and was extremely particular in her care for them. It is said that ìwhen any of her boys were out late at night she would take a servant, go out and not return until she had found the missing one, whom she would bring home with her. On one occaison she found one of her sons at a card table with a crowd of jolly boys. She walked up to the table pulled the cards off into her lap led her son home and thus broke up the game. ì37

On the breaking out of the Revolutionary War he, along with his brother Jacob,  joined Capt Rolandís company of Associatorsî for the defense of American Liberty. They were associated July 5, 1775. He was born on the old homestead, and inherited it by his fatherís will, and in 1896 it was still in possession of his grandchildren. ....The older portion of the house was built by his father; just when is not known. John Daniel made an addition to it in 1812. It is solid stone, the one gable being without window or opening in the wall. The walls are said to be two feet thick. It is in a good state of preservation, and , (ed note, excerpt  written  1898)  will no doubt stand another century or more.  It was in a corner of the orchard in the rear of the house that Yost Swope was buried and where his remains rested until 1884  (149 years). ì46

Mentioned in his father's Will:
ì I give and devise unto my Son Daniel all that Messuage Plantation and Tract of Land thereon I now dwells containing by the Draught thereof One hundred and Thirteen Acres and the usuall allowance To be held by my said Son Daniel his Heirs and assigns for everî. Children:
ìAdam Swope was the youngest child, and was born in the homestead...There he grew to manhood and left the impress of a boyish ambition by carving his name on the stone lintel of the spring-house door. In 1898 it was almost obliterated by time, only this remaining:íAdam Swope, 17í ...By his fatherís will he received a farm in lancaster county, part of the original Swope purchase, on which he lived. Early in 1800, at the urgent solicitation of his wife, because she thought the Swopes were becoming so numerous in Lancaster county that they  could not be distinguished, he sold his farm and moved to Adams county, Pa.  He bought a farm and other property near Littlestown, where he continued to live until death. He was also a large holder of Virginia lands. His wife did not live long to enjoy the distintion of dwelling in a community where the name was uncommon...Adam Swope was also a silversmith; several pieces of his work are yet preserved by his descendants as precious heirlooms. After the purchase of his farm he built a mill on a small stream running through it, but the stream did not furnish sufficient power and the mill was abandoned, and subsequently became the dwelling place of bats, and , the superstitious said, ìghostsî. They, no doubt, saw
A Phantom miller at the midnight hour,
Grinding his wheat by and unseen power.
Adam Swope was a member of a military organization, known as the ìassociatorsî belonging to Capt Rolandís company, asoociated the 5th day of July, 1775, for the defence of American liberty. ..î57
