Children Of Johannes and Maria Magdalena Bentz and their baptismal records -the children are viewable in link with their baptismal records and sponsors when known. and are credited to two sources:  Christ Lutheran York and Rev Lischy's records

Alias:  The Bentz name appears variously spelled, and often spelled with variants by the same scribe [ie Rev Lischy in his baptismal  records on the family and Christ Lutheran Records also  regarding children's baptsims]. The signed oath of allegiance record indicates that John Bentz signed his name Johannes BENZ.

Occupation Detail: Yeomen [farmer], as mentioned in deed of sale to Reitinger 1770. In addition he seemed to serve as well in various civic roles. There is a John Bens, supervisor of highways, Manchester Township, 1759, 1760 and a  John Pence, overseer of the poor, Manchester Township, 176561

Notes on Johann Bentz
  • John and his wife first settled in Lancaster County in that portion which became York64. He and his wife pertained to Lancaster County  at least from 1738 when first born child Michael is found in the records of Christ Lutheran [now of York County]  . This portion of Lancaster became York when that county was form in 1749.  A Land Warrant was  issued to John Bentz of Dover Township64 1749 in Manchester Twp, York county and that land was sold by John Bentz of Dover Township, York County in 1770, with a neighbor bordering that land  in the 1770 deed of sale being Michael BENTZ, John's  son. The land that John bought in 1749 was on,the Little Conewago Creek, about midway between the Bull Road and the Carlisle Road, adjoining the lands of Martin Bower and Philip Kreber.
  • [D 357  O 31 1770. John Bens of Dover Twp. yeoman & Magdalena his wife: to Stephen Rietinger: for  L350: a warrant right granted the grantor N 22 1749, for 150 acres along the Conewago Creek in Manchester Twp. [Deed Evidences] ]
  • See Land Warrant 1749 and Deed of Sale 1770, which describes exactly where the land was located.
  • John and Magdalena Bentz's  son Michael is found present 1814 in discussion of the land in Manchester twp, relevant to subsequent deeds of sales by the Reitingers, and is found as a bordering owner, up to 1814 when the Reitinger deed study stops.
  • I can not account for John  being "of Dover Township" in 1770 deed of sale to Ritinger, while he is buried on his plantation in West Manchester Twp in 177864., unless the "on his plantation" refers to his son Michael's land, part of which appears to have formerly been John's, but later to his son Michael.
  • More on the Land Warrant 1749

  • A Land Warrant is a right to survey, and in 1749 John Bentz of Dover Township received a proprietary warrant giving him that right in the newly formed [from Lancaster County] York, County Pa, in the township of Manchester. In 1770 John Bentz of Dover Township sold it.

John [found as Johannes PENCE] bought a land warrant of 149 acres of  land in Manchester Nov 22 of 1749 as found in York County Records.62 . John Bentz Hammein his Descendants of John Bentz describes this proprietary warrant of that same date  as " In the new county of York,...a Proprietors Warrant for 163 acres of land in Manchester Twp. , now West Manchester Township, along the Little Conewago Creek, about midway between the Bull Road and the Carlisle Road, adjoining the lands of Martin Bower and Philip Kreber. A portion of this land was deeded October 31,1770, to Stephen Reittinger, later Stephen Reittinger and wife sold this to George Nailor" 64
When John Bentz sold his land in  1770 he is clearly  said to be of Dover Township, York County. On 31 Oct of that year, John BENS of Dover Township, County of York, Yeomen, and his wife Magdalena sold to Stephen Ridinger for 350 pounds land in Manchester Township, 150 acres beginning at Conowago Creek in Manchester S 80 E 60 perches to a post set by Michael Bentz [John's son], S 53 E 116 perches to a post, then by Martin Bower's line N 58 E 93 perches to a post, thence N 15 W 46 perches to a white oak, thence by the land of Phillip Kreber N 25 W 139 perches to a white oak tree thence N 56 W 34 perches to a post, then S 62 W 80 perches to Conowago Creek, thence up the said creek the several courses thereof to the place of beginning Containing 163 acres more or less.
John and Magdalena Bentz's  son Michael is found present 1814 in discussion of that land in Manchester relevant to subsequent deeds of sales by the Reitingers, and is found as a bordering owner, up to 1814 when the deed study stops.
See Deed Abstracts: Reidinger Family Location: York County, Pennsylvania. In which the original Bentz sale to Ritinger, and then the subsequent Ritinger sales clearly showing Michael as neighbor, can be found.

John Bentz Hamme's Entry on Johannes Bentz from  The Descendants of Johannes Bentz as compiled by John Bentz Hamme  written ca 1944

Jane, a fellow descendant ,  transcribed her grandmotherís notes which themselves relied  on  work compiled by John Bentz Hamme and she
passed them along to me. According to that record,   this John Bentz took the oath of allegiance on 1732 arriving on the Loyal Judith from Rotterdam. For the entirity of this record see The Descendants of Johannes Bentz as compiled by John Bentz Hamme   written ca 1944.
Caveat Emptor. This writer has found some errors in the text. My Comments are given in italics and red. Otherwise, the text is unchanged.

Hamme's entry states for Johannes BENTZ:

ìJohn Bentz, our emigrant ancestor was born, probably in the Palatinate of the Rhine in 1707 [Loyal Judith shows he was 23 making his birth 1708/9 without variance to the year given for that ship record]  The place of birth and the name of his parents are not known. At the age of 23 years he, in company with an older brother Michael, aged 27 years, sailed from Rotterdam in the ship Loyal Judith with Robert Turpin as Master. They arrived at Philadelphia and took the oath of allegiance September 25,1732. [caveat emptor, no proof has been provided that these two were siblings-see Ship Loyal Judith and brief discussion of these two]
He and his wife, Maria Magdalena, came to York County, then known as Lancaster County. On November 22,1749 John Bentz of Dover Twp. In the new county of York, was given a Proprietors Warrant for 163 acres of land in Manchester Twp. , now West Manchester Township, along the Little Conewago Creek, about midway between the Bull Road and the Carlisle Road, adjoining the lands of Martin Bower and Philip Kreber. A portion of this land was deeded October 31,1770, to Stephen Reittinger, later Stephen Reittinger and wife sold this to George Nailor. [editorís note, see deed transcript above] This tract then joined lands of Henry Bensil, Philip Kreber, Peter Lind formerly Martin Bower, and Michael Bentz.
John Bentz was a Lutheran and one of the signers of the Charter for Christ Lutheran Church in York, Pa., signed September 1733. He died in 1778 and was buried on his plantation at the north side and quite close to his house, where, in 1941 several tombstones were still standing, but the inscriptions were entirely obliterated. There is no record of the death of his wife. It is quite likely that she was also buried there.

Baptismal Records of the Children of Johannes BENTZ and his wife Maria Magdalena are found in two separate baptismal sources, that of Christ Lutheran in York, and that of Rev Jacob Lishy. These Records show the variance of spellings for this surname, even by the same scribe [ie. Rev Lischy a reformed minister]  or same record source [ie Christ Lutheran records]
